Brand New Websites Were to Be Created. The goal was to develop a more user-friendly, updated, and accessible website. To achieve this, it was decided that content would be prioritized based on top tasks.

Top Tasks Were the Solution

The website is the university's most important communication channel. With many target groups having different needs, the site needed to make it easy for everyone to find what they needed. To achieve this, it was decided that content would be prioritized based on top tasks.

How They Found the Top Tasks

Using Skyra, they conducted a "discovery survey" to map user needs and top tasks. A mini-survey asked an open-ended question about what people visited the website to do. The responses were categorized to identify patterns. This categorization was then used to define what the top tasks were about and what they should be called.

What Did People Visit the Website To Do?

2,700 responses were collected and categorized in the Skyra dashboard. Here are some examples:

What did you visit the website for?

  • "Check the structure of my study program"
  • "Find an employee's email address"
  • "Find out how I can reserve my place"
  • "See the library's summer opening hours"

The categorization revealed clear top tasks.

The three tasks that most people visited the website to do were:

  • Read about studies
  • Find contact information
  • Application and admission

Users' Own Words

At UiA, users explained what they needed in their own words. Free-text responses are valuable, especially when mapping top tasks for the first time. A discovery survey made user needs clear.
